How Our Government Is Set Up
Litchfield, Illinois is a non-home rule community. Non home rule unit is a municipality with a population of 25,000 or less. Home rule unites may impose a home rule sales tax in 0.25% increments with no maximum rate limit. Non-home rule communities may impose a sales tax in 0.25% increments with a 1% maximum rate limit.
The City of Litchfield operates under a Council/City Administrator form of government.
The City Administrator provides professional services under the guidance of the Mayor and eight Council persons.
Council persons are elected for a four-year term.
City Council acts as the policy-making body for the City.
