News Title Sewer System Overview

The sewer system in the City of Litchfield is a combined sewer system whereas storm water and household waste is delivered to the waste water treatment plant by the same lines. The department has a combined sewer operations maintenance plan in place that is approved by the Illinois EPA.

The streets are swept on a weekly schedule, ditches are cleaned, street and curb inlets are cleaned, culverts are cleaned and the sewer system is cleaned on a regular basis. The purpose of the maintenance operation is to prevent waste buildup in the transmission lines and to prevent undesirable material such as leaves, cans, paper and other waste from entering the system from ditches and inlets. Having a clean system gives homeowners a more trouble free disposal system and increases our capacity for storm water. The transmission line from the City owned main to the residence or business is the responsibility of the owner.
